There is a very specific face people make when they see a sewing machine for the first time. It’s a mix of “That looks like a power tool“, “I am definitely going to sew my finger to the fabric“, and, in my very realistic case here at The Craft & Current Club, “I’m not going to finish sewing that bag today” after seeing what I had planned for them.
But this makes it all the more special when you take someone who has never touched a sewing machine, has no confidence in using one, or hasn’t seen one since secondary school – and I teach them to sew a handmade bag in just a few hours later.
Last week, I hosted the very first The Craft & Current Club beginners’ sewing workshop in Milton Keynes. The mission was simple but ambitious: take a group of complete beginners and guide them in creating our custom-designed Ruffle Heart Bag (minus the embroidery, as I had already prepared that for them).
I’ll be honest — I spent a week designing and testing this pattern to ensure it was beginner-proof, prepping every inch of fabric so the focus could stay on the fun part: learning to create, with 90s pop anthems to do the rest of the heavy lifting.

I didn’t just want to teach a skill; I wanted to create a vibe. Most sewing workshops will teach you how to make a basic rectangular tote bag, but I believe in learning through doing. Life is more fun than a rectangular tote, and once you get your own sewing machine, I doubt you’ll be making basic totes, so I thought this beginner sewing workshop would be ideal. Not only does it help you learn the skills you need to be confident with a sewing machine, but it also teaches you to make things beyond the basics and let your imagination run free. To me, this is the best part about sewing.
